This ‘How To’ guide can only be used on PlayStation 4 consoles with an exploitable firmware installed.

How to install .PKG files?

A .pkg file is used to install software, games, DLC, backups or homebrew onto PlayStation Device such as PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. You can compare it with a .exe file for the Windows operating system.

IMPORTANT: Always make sure the .PKG file you’d like to install is compatible with the firmware installed on your device!

Method 1 – With a USB Drive:

Copy the .pkg files you want to install to the root of your USB Drive. Afterwards connect it with the PS4.

  1. Choose to run the exploit with a HEN Payload included or run the exploit and sent a HEN Payload to your console.
  2. Navigate to Settings
  3. Scroll down and choose Debug Settings
  4. Click on Game
  5. Click on Package Installer

You can now either install all package at once or select the package you want to install.

Method 2 – Remote PKG Installing with PS4 PKG Linker

Famous developer Flat_z has shared a method that allows users to install packages the same way as Sony does from their network, but instead of using their CDN you are using your own network.

Requirements:

Steps:

  1. Extract the PS4 PKG Linker archive to C:/
  2. Run PS4_PKG_Linker.exe
  3. Select the folder with the .pkg file you want to install by clicking directory twice.
  4. Press Start Server
  5. Navigate to the PKG List tab
  6. Select the .pkg you want to install or uninstall.

How to run applications that require PSN access?

Some applications like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube and Hulu require users to connect with the PlayStation Network before opening the app. This of course is a problem for those of you who have a hackable PS4 console with an older firmware.

This problem is solved by developers who modify the original application into a ‘No PSN’ version. These modified applications can be installed on your system like any other .pkg file.

You can find or request some of them here:

  • Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ps4homebrew/search?q=no%20psn&restrict_sr=1

Not a lot of applications have been modified yet and it’s possible you encounter some bugs using them.
